Because of its flexibility wood has become the material of choice for construction of homes in earthquake prone California. That said there are other materials that can be used for structure, including concrete, Concrete Masonry Unit (CMU), and Load Bearing Metal Studs. All of these are non-combustible and have their advantages and disadvantages. These systems should be addressed with your architect and engineer.
