I’m writing this while the news is reporting yet another wildfire. Let me start with… we are deeply saddened by the apocalyptic destruction we have experienced in the LA area this month. Several of our friends have lost their homes to this catastrophe and our hearts go out to all that have been affected. Areas we know and love will not be the same in our lifetime.
We at Bricolage Inc. have been thinking about how to minimize the loss of structures to wildfire. Having grown up in Santa Monica this is not the first time I have personally known people affected by a disastrous wildfire. When I see smoke from a wildfire, it’s my thoughts are that someone’s home, dreams, and life have been changed beyond comprehension.
Now we are facing unprecedented climate conditions that create unprecedented wildfires, and we need to adapt. That said… For those faced with rebuilding and designing homes for this new reality, what can be done to protect a home from wildfire? For those faced with rebuilding what can we do to Fire Harden our existing homes. There are many ways fire can enter a home. We will share helpful tips to fire harden homes as we continue our research.
